CHRISTINA JOINS A HIKING GROUP

I recently joined a hiking group called Boquete Nature Hikes.  Jere McCormick, an experienced and knowledgeable hiker and Boquete resident leads the group on a different hike each week.  Jere has an extensive knowledge of Boquete's many hiking trails, and its been fun to meet new people and explore some different trails and new scenery.

 A Beautiful Walk in Lucero
My first hike with the group took place in Lucero and was more of a long leisurely walk than a hike. Lucero is a 15 minute drive from Boquete, and the the trails were mostly flat but beautiful, and we ended up at a nearby reservoir.

Interesting flowers along the way...

Beautiful mix of colors in these flowers.

Horses in Lucero

We ended our walk at the Lucero Reservoir, which is quite beautiful with the mountains in the background.

I spotted this Northern Jacanda on the reservoir.

                                        A Hike in Caldera
My second hike was in the area of Caldera, which is a 20 minute drive from Boquete.

We passed by the Caldera River at various points during our hike.

This guayacán tree with bright yellow flowers is in full bloom.  Standing underneath the tree and looking above into the sky lends itself to a fantastic view.

We even saw some petroglyphs along the way!

Beautiful Flowers

Spectacular mountain views

Beautiful countryside studded with palm trees

I had never seen or tasted this fruit before, and on our hike we saw several of these trees.  The joba fruit, when ripe like this red one, at first glance could be easily mistaken for a cherry tomato.  The size, shape, and outer peel are identical.

The yellow fruit inside is both sweet and slightly sour - delicioso!

Giant Bull

Marañon (cashew)

A local caballero passes us by along the trail.

Lots of brilliantly colored bromeliads on this trail.

Beautiful Flowers

At the end of the trail we chatted with these friendly locals who said they were packing tobacco.
