EL SENDERO DE LOS QUETZALES

Boquete is known for having some fabulous hiking trails, and our family has certainly had the opportunity to try out many of them during our past 2 months here.  Recently, Greg and I hiked part of the Sendero de Los Quetzales trail, which is located within the Volcan Baru National Park, and known as one of Boquete's most beautiful hikes.  It is a 6 kilometer trail in the cloud forest and links the town of Boquete to the town of Guadalupe (near Cerro Punta).  We accessed the trail at the foot of Volcán Barú, about a 1/2 hour drive from our house.  We were able to complete the first 3 kilometers of the hike before we had to head back in order to make sure we picked the kids up from school on time.  We particularly enjoyed hiking in the lush, wet and green cloud forest - moss covered everything around us!   We didn't have time to make it all of the way to Cerro Punta, but are glad that we had this opportunity to experience yet another unique hike.  Sendero Los Quetzales is regarded as one of Central America's most stunning hiking trails, and we were certainly impressed by what we saw!  One of these days, we'd love get up early and complete the entire hike from one end to the other, and back again.  Our guess is that this will be an all-day hike, as the increase in elevation is steep.  The altitude at the Ranger Station in Boquete is 5,850 feet, and the highest point on the trail is marked at 8,125 feet.  We'll need to be in good shape to complete this one!

The Caldera River runs along this beautiful trail.

Another amazing flower along the hiking trail

As we head back to the trailhead it suddenly starts to dump rain - out come the rain ponchos!
